In this blog post, we circle back and\noutline exactly what happens when a minor is charged with DUI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DUI Under 21 in Maryland<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As you know, the legal drinking age in the state of Maryland\nis 21. As such, DUI charges have much stricter criteria when it comes to those\nunder that age. Individuals over 21 are charged with DUI after their BAC tests\nat .08 or above. Conversely, a .02 BAC level can lead to the charge for those\nunder 21. Such low levels could be achieved after even less than a full\nbeverage is consumed. However, the scent of alcohol may lead officers to\nconduct sobriety tests even if no erratic driving behavior was detected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DUI Under 21 Consequences<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas first time DUI offenders over age 21 may have their\nlicense revoked for up to 6 months, those under 21 may lose their license for a\nfull year. This revocation comes with a host of other potential penalties,\nincluding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A fine of up to $1,000<\/li><li>Mandated participation in the state\u2019s ignition\ninterlock program<\/li><li>A maximum of one year in jail<\/li><li>Required participation in an alcohol abuse and\nassessment program<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supervised Probation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Another key distinction between underage DUI and traditional\ncharges is the corresponding probation. In many cases, individuals under 21 are\ngiven supervised probation instead of unsupervised probation. This is simply\nbecause of the concern that someone not legally permitted to consume alcohol\nwas charged with such a serious crime.
