As you do so, we recommend taking\nsome time to ensure you\u2019re familiar with the new REAL ID compliance deadline. Starting\nOctober 1, 2021, all air travelers are required to present a valid passport,\nmilitary ID or REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license to board a flight within the\nUnited States. If you are not prepared for REAL ID compliance, you may not be\nable to get to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint or\nfly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is REAL ID?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>REAL ID compliance is designed to make commercial aviation\nsafer and validate the identity of anyone boarding an airplane. The Department\nof Homeland Security is working alongside states to ensure that REAL ID\ncompliance is taking effect and that citizens are being notified of new\nrequirements. This has been a tricky process amidst the pandemic, however. In\nfact, the initial deadline of October 1, 2020 was backed up an entire year in\norder to give citizens more time to safely comply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obtaining your Real ID is actually a bit of a process now,\nso we definitely don\u2019t recommend waiting until the last minute to get the ball\nrolling. You can\u2019t just drive down to your nearest MVA branch at your\nconvenience to get started. Instead, you\u2019ll have to <a href=\"http:\/\/license.mva.maryland.gov\/CheckList\/default.aspx\">schedule an\nappointment<\/a> to bring in all of your REAL ID documentation in order to\nreceive the new card. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Am I Already Compliant?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently five different symbols used to denote a\nREAL ID on a driver\u2019s license or REAL ID:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gold star<\/li><li>Black star<\/li><li>Gold circle with a star cutout<\/li><li>Black circle with a star cutout<\/li><li>Gold grizzly bear with a star cutout <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If none of these are present on your ID, it\u2019s time to\nschedule an appointment to make the switch!
