It\u2019s an important\nresponsibility for any driver to understand what should be done after a car\naccident.  In Maryland alone there are\nover 100,000 accidents every year, so whether you\u2019ve recently experienced an\naccident or you just want to be better prepared, here\u2019s what you should (and\nperhaps more importantly shouldn\u2019t) do after a car accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Safety First<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Stop the car in a safe area\nif possible, turn off the engine, check on everyone in the car, and be aware of\nany injuries that may have occurred. \nDon\u2019t exit the car until you\u2019re completely sure that it\u2019s safe to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Call 911<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Inform the police after a car\naccident as soon as possible.  An officer\nwill create a report of the incident and interview all drivers involved in the\ncrash.  This is especially crucial if\nanother driver may have been intoxicated. \nIf another driver tries to convince you not to contact the police (or\ninsurance companies), this is all the more reason to do so in order to protect\nyourself.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collect Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Take note of the date, time,\nand location of the accident.  Always be\nsure to collect the name, phone number, address, driver\u2019s license number,\ninsurance company, policy number, and any other identifying information of all\ndrivers involved.  Also collect the make,\nmodel, year, license plate number, and registered owner of the cars involved.  If there are any witnesses, collect their\ninformation.  It is important to write\ndown, either in your phone or on paper, as much information as possible, including\nwhat other drivers say.  Having written information\nfrom the time of the accident can help you significantly in a future case.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take Pictures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Pictures are not only more\ndescriptive than words; they\u2019re more trustworthy. You or others in your car\nshould take as many pictures as possible of the accident from all different angles,\nincluding pictures of the cars involved and any damages taken place.  It\u2019s also helpful to take pictures of\ndriver\u2019s licenses, insurance information, vehicle registrations, and all\ninvolved in the accident.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listen More Than You Speak<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Even if you aren\u2019t at fault,\nit\u2019s important to remember your Miranda Rights (\u201cAnything you say can and will\nbe used against you in a court of law\u201d). \nOnly state facts if needed and avoid any speculation.  If others say anything incriminating, such as\napologizing for being at fault, always make note of it.  Again, writing information down is much more\nreliable than trying to remember it. \nNever speak to the insurance company of another driver, and when\nreporting the accident to your insurance company, it\u2019s in your best interest to\nspeak with an attorney before providing a recorded statement.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
